This large (6"x9") face jug was fired in the first chamber of the wood kiln where the flames and wood ash nicely interacted with the amber celedon glaze. Face jugs originated in the south during the 1800s. It is thought that they originally were made by African American potters as grave markers to scare away bad spirits. They became popular as whisky jugs in the mid-1800s with the idea the 'ugly' face would keep children from sampling the contents. This beauty can either scare away our current viruses, function as a vase, or, if you so desire, hold a single malt.
